I’m a 16 yr old who enjoys reading National Geographics and books on biology and genetic science. I also listen to instrumentals such as piano and violin as well as orchestra on my mp3 player. If I have free time, I will take walks around the park or long walks around the neighborhood to see where I will end up, especially if its during a sunny day or a dark night. I write stories, I don’t have a television, and sometimes when I’m bored, I watch a documentary on Youtube or some other website instead of watching anime or Smallville or whatever. Reading and listening to my mp3 in the park or somewhere with lots of trees has been one of my favorite past times. I love going to the museum.
Problem is, whenever I read one of my NG’s or books on genetics in class, everyone else will look at me like I’m a freak or something. Or they would walk up asking me, why are you reading that crap? When I’m listening to my music on my mp3, someone would walk up to me and ask what I’m listening to. When I reply orchestra, they would be like “WTF is wrong with you??? If I’m seen reading in a park, people will stare at me like “oh my god, what a freak!!!” Sometimes people ask me what I did during the weekend and I replied, “oh I went to the museum again and I also saw an interesting documentary on Napoleon.” “You watched Napoleon Dynamite?” “No, Napoleon Bonaparte” “Oh…..what a freak, lets gtfo.” The teacher asked a survey on who has a TV jokingly knowing everyone had a TV. When I’m the only one who didn’t raise my hand, everyone gives me a strange stare. When I watch a documentary on Youtube and my cousin/s come by, they would be like “oh your doing homework?” “No I’m just watching for fun” “What the hell? Who watches documentaries for fun???? Hurry up cuz a new episode of Bleach and Naruto came out and I missed One Tree Hill yesterday” If I’m out on a long, late night walk, my dad would call asking where am I and I would reply that I’m taking a walk. Then he would reply, “What???!!! Get your *** back here and stop wasting time!!!” So am I a freak, a geek, or just plain ****ing weird? Help me, I feel so isolated and lonely now.

no your not wierd at all trust me most people are probley like you it doenst matter what you like and what you do its about enjoying life and it seems like you are. You shouldnt care of what people think about you they are just insicure about themselves and your not. And you just need to meet a person that is like you also you never know what is out there(: I know lots of people at my school that would probley relate to you, and do the same things. Really you don’t need to worry about it.

you’re not weird you’re just different. you are not of the norm and that can freak a lot of people out. don’t worry about what everyone thinks. it seems to me you enjoy learning which is a very valuable thing to have. i was kind of like you when i was that age, but i also partied and did other things though. you might want to try partying or going out sometime to become well rounded. but if those things don’t interest you then don’t worry about it.

Your not weird your just against the grain…… there is nothing wrong with being an intelligent person who enjoys learning more and more.. I on the other hand do watch tv. I listen to mainstream music and i dont like to read, but i do like to hear some classical music sometimes to relax me before a class,and i watch documentarys when its something that im interested in, but that does not make me weird nor does it make you weird. Dont worry about what everyone else thinks do what you want and surround yourself with those who enjoy the things that you enjoy. Its better to be isolated and alone (being yourself) than to be with the in crowd and (be someone your not)

Being unique does not make one weird. I read NG when I was your age, also Popular Science, Scientific American and would read the dictionary for interesting words. I also read Mad Magazine and National Lampoon. I was a surfer, a golfer, a wrestler, and an egg head. I grew up perfectly normal. Instead of walks, I would ride my bike or a skateboard. I didn’t worry about what other people thought of me, I wasn’t doing anything for their approval. I was doing things for my enjoyment, for my learning. I learned more on my own than I ever did in school. It’s tough at your age, I know I was there myself, but soon you’ll be past this and moving on with your life. So don’t sweat what others think right now, it’s just not important.
